Living in Las Vegas and having more than 20 years of skincare experience, I have seen it all in terms of skin problems. But a revolutionary new form of skincare treatment called Radiofrequency Microneedling (RF Microneedling) has offered a new approach to treating many skin issues and is gaining popularity quickly. Despite being very trendy, many don’t understand exactly what RF Microneedling is or why the treatment can be so beneficial, so let’s take an in-depth look at RF Microneedling and explain why everyone is talking about it.
What is RF Microneedling?
In simple terms, RF Microneedling is a skincare procedure that uses radiofrequency waves and micro needles to refresh facial skin. It is used as an anti-aging treatment, allowing for the body to produce collagen and diminishing fine lines and wrinkles. It can also improve texture and volume, giving the skin a more youthful appearance. Other skin conditions that it treats include acne scars, large pores, sagging skin and elastin production.
While general microneedling can accomplish similar goals, RF Microneedling can attain these results in a faster time frame. Though neither are permanent, RF Microneedling can last anywhere from 6-12 months before needing to add maintenance treatments.
What to Expect During an RF Microneedling Treatment
Because RF Microneedling has minimal downtime, many clients don’t need to adjust their daily routines when scheduling a treatment. A single session can last anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour, depending on the extent of the work being done.
After applying a numbing cream and letting it take effect, the microneedling device enters the skin and delivers radiofrequency energy below the surface. This prompts the body to create new collagen growth, which in turn treats the specific conditions. Most clients do not find the treatment painful, especially due to the use of a numbing cream.
What to Expect After an RF Microneedling Treatment
Though there isn’t much downtime after a treatment, some clients will experience a short time of healing from redness, swelling, pinpoint bleeding and possible bruising in the following few days. To help the healing along, we suggest you avoid harsh cleaning products and washcloths, but gently cleanse the area multiple times a day. Be sure to avoid anti-aging and cleaning products that contain acids and photosensitive ingredients, such as glycolics and lactics, as well as vitamin A and C, and of course, retinol. We offer a post-treatment serum by ProCell which can be ordered here.
What are the Long Term Expectations of RF Microneedling?
Though treatments cannot turn back time, RF Microneedling can permanently reduce the appearance of scars and help combat other signs of aging. We suggest beginning with treatments every other month, and then entering into a maintenance phase once the desired level has been achieved. With proper maintenance every 6 to 12 months, clients can expect to keep the most drastic changes at bay, refreshing the skin enough to show a 20% to 60% improvement. As for long term side effects, there are not many outside of slight irritation and redness of the skin. As with any treatment, there is always a risk, which is why you should consult your esthetician to see if RF Microneedling is right for you.
Is RF Microneedling Right for You?
There are some situations where RF Microneedling is not a good fit, including those who are dealing with a skin infection or cold sores, have psoriasis, or might be receiving chemo. Call us today to discuss your particular situation and we will find the right treatment for you!
